MEDICAL UPDATE MONDAY 7:01 PM
Cody is on another antibiotic today. The first of the cultures have started to come back from the lab. Based on what they showed we have started him on Meropenem. This is to target the pneumonia specifically. He is still on the board spectrum antibiotic, Vancomycin. This is to be on the safe side until we have all the cultures back from the lab. We have stopped the vibrating vest treatment. After three days with minimal return from the treatment it was determined to be relatively ineffective. He is making progress with the pneumonia and the two key numbers that measure how his lungs are preforming look great. We look at the percentage of oxygen the ventilator is giving him. Right now it is at 40% o2. The next number we look at is his oxygen saturation. That number is at 99%. When he was diagnosed with pneumonia his ventilator was giving him 70% oxygen and his o2 saturation was at 90%. So, he has come a long way from those numbers.
Current Vitals:
ICP: 24
o2 Sat: 99
Body Temp: 37.0
Heart Rate: 97 bpm
Blood Pressure: 145/72
Ventilator o2 Percentage: 40%
His ICP is climbing a little bit but it is due that we just moved him around a bit. We proped up his right side a bit to give a little movement. We expect the ICP to come down again when we ge him back into his "resting" postion. The rest of his vitals look great.
Meropenem is an ultra-broad spectrum injectable antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of infections, including meningitis and pneumonia.
Oxygen Saturation measures the percentage of hemoglobin binding sites in the bloodstream occupied by oxygen.

My family will drop prayers and thoughts for Cody. I too suffered from a head injury that left me in a medically induced coma for 3 wks. in 07'. If freinds or family have any questions or concerns from someone who has experienced a similar injury don't hesitate to ask. fletchandriss@gmail.com

Cody, Chels, Jesse Tucker Mom & Dad,
Keep on being strong. We are all behind you and supporting you.
At ELITEAM we have a kick wall that we write ELITEAM quotes on. This year's quotes are "prepare to the fullest - compete fiercely - finish strong".
Under the quote we painted "Go Cody Go" today. We told the campers about Cody's fight so whenever we walk by the wall (which is probably 40 times a day) we touch Cody's name and send him some positive energy. Hope you are feeling it Cody.
We have a picture of the kids around the sign. Is there an email address we can send it to?
Have a good night Cody and Crew.
LEW & Kelley

What a fantastic blog format—I love the way you're blending personal messages with medical updates, and I particularly admire the definitions portion of each entry so people don't have to scoot away to figure out what something is. Bravo.
And best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Cody, whats happening? Had to comment on Paul's post. We were definitely laughing about some stupid stuff we used to do. Wow. Can't wait to see you up and about again. Pulling for you big time. You helped me out so much last year and I can't thank you enough. Be seeing you soon.

My heart goes out to you and your family. My little brother who is also a pro athlete recently had a severe head trauma that Dr.s said that he would most likely not recover from. He spent 4 weeks in a coma, but just 6 months later he is almost 100% back to his former self. It has been a struggle. I know that with your family's love and support and the drive that athletes have miracles do happen, and I will pray for a miracle for you and yours.

Vancomycin is a very powerful antibiotic. It can clear out everything in your body including the good gut flora (naturally occurring bacteria, yeasts etc) that help with digestion. This may result in diarrhea. It can also trigger autoimmune responses such as gluten intolerance. You may want to talk to the Docs and see if there is some kind of pro-biotics (yogurt, pills) he can use right before they DC the vancomycin and then continuing for a few weeks. I am NOT saying to not take the vancomycin. Just take some care to assist his stomach in recovering good bacteria if needed.
