MEDICAL UPDATE FRIDAY 2:22 PM Calling all people

Hey Everyone,

So I'm calling upon all the motivators out there to let Cody know he needs to get up and walk and take his pain medication because if he doesn't were never getting him outta here.

He has a fever which isn't going away, and it sucks, but he has to get out of bed everyday at least once.

We are going to try and get him up in an hour as he is sleeping now uninterrupted,  he has completely refused to get up at this point.
He is frustrated he can't walk on his own. He doesn't understand why he needs 4 people to help him.

Chelsea is with him right now and I am headed down after a morning of errands and supply stocking for us there's never an easy time.
I am hoping by then he will feel rested enough and he will get up like yesterday.
His days are going to be long and hard during this period.

He did ask Chelsea for a number 9 with a sprite. LOL

I will update you shortly after I read him your comments and he gets up for a walk.

Time for a kick in the pants guys.  Coaches lets see what ya got !

Go Cody Go!!!

    Hey there Cody,
We here at Utah State Athletics have been following your story and progress from the beginning. We've been very impressed and happy with your progress so far. We've heard that you are struggling with the walking and pain meds this morning and just hope that you remember that sometimes we all need a helping hand along this path called life. Be sure to take that hand because that means that the people around you love you and want whats best for you. Right now you need them but someday they may need you. Be strong and accept that help. We are rooting for you up here in Logan and wish for a speedy recovery. Athletes always bounce back a little better than the average person and we know you can do it. We look forward to the next post and hearing that you've done well with your walking today and for days to come. GO CODY GO!

    Codewa,
I know things are tough right now but you can get up and walk. Its like when we were driving from Denver to VT and our alturnator went and we had to drive the whole way in 3rd gear. It took a while but we made it. Or the time when u were rally driving in Norway and lost the power stearing. It was a long and physicaly tough drive to Oslo, but you did it. This is just another obstical you can overcome! U may be the only 60pt 20 year old to race WC GS... You can do this! U r Sancho!
    Love and prayers,

We all know you want out of that place and the key for the that "problem" is to take your medicines and go for a walk. Even though you need other people to help you to walk it is better than nothing. They are there just for you and their job is to help you to recover from all this. The more you can do the sooner you are back on skis and we all know that is the thing you mostly want. Cheer up and take step by step towards recovering and your dreams. You can do that!

Time to turn up the good and turn down the suck. You're kicking ass and its amazing you can walk already so keep up the hard work!

Get your butt out of bed and start walking. You know, the more you walk, the sooner you're out of there and we can go hiking.
You are the best and seriously rock all the parties. Keep being strong. I'm missing your mad skills on the dance floor.
I'll see you soon, and maybe we can walk together when I'm there!
    Love,

I know this must frustrate the hell out of you, but you're never going to be able to walk, run or ski if you don't rely on the people you need now to help you get there. It must just suck - I can't even begin to imagine. But, the faster (and more) you get your ass up and out of bed, the faster you'll heal and feel better. I am sure patience is such a foreign notion to you right now -but you have to walk before you can run. And, in this case, you have to walk with the help of others before you can walk by yourself. Baby steps, Code.

I know you were working out so hard before the accident...you need to sustain that muscle mass somehow...so hang in there, friend - get up and show those nurses who is boss. Take advantage of your time with Chelsea before she heads to NZ and show her what you've got. I know you must be bummed she's leaving...but if you get up and get working now, you'll impress Chelsea when she comes back and you're running circles around her. ha ha. (Sorry, Chels - I know we just met once...but I have to motivate him somehow).

Honestly, guys, your family's strength is so very admirable. Chelsea/Draven/Jesse/etc. - you guys are a godsend. Cody is truly blessed to have such a wonderful, strong-willed family(/friends). I know where he gets it!

Slow and steady wins the race...

    Usmevy (smiles),

    Meg

I am a current teacher at BMA and learned of Cody's accident. I have been following the blog to see how Cody is doing. I am relatively new to skiing but married a man raised in a ski family and have been working at Burke for 4 years. Ski families are the most amazing families I have encountered, particularly in my 15 years of teaching and 43 years of living. Ski families are truly FAMILIES. I have developed a theory about this from listening to my husband's stories and from observations at BMA and on the mountain. Ski families work hard to have fun. Kids that grow up skiing learn that it takes EFFORT to have fun.
It's like, "dammit, we're going to have fun as soon as we pack the lunches and the gear, drive to the ski area, schlep our stuff through the parking lot, cram our feet into these stiff boots, cover ourselves from head to toe, sweat in the lodge, go outside and freeze on the lift, for minutes of downhill bliss. And we're going to do this as a FAMILY, dammit!" These families understand the reward of hard work. (I think this may be particularly true in the east where the reward per trip ratio is lower than in the west?) Anyway, the Marshall family is obviously no exception to this ski family rule and I am sure that Cody's life experiences will continue to support his will and effort to get stronger. Best wishes to all of you for patience, persistence and progress.

Hey Cody! As an elite athlete you know that to be the best you can be you need to build these skills with the guidance and leadership of experts (coaches, trainers, etc). It's a building process - step by step and I KNOW that you didn't always like what your coaches asked you to do (who does!). But you did it because you know it's the way to get where you want to be. Now, whether you like it our not, these experts are doctors, nurses and your family. All of these people are helping you get where you want to be - OUT and doing it ALL On your own again. Until then, do what they say, you'll be so psyched with the results.

THIS IS THE PATH YOU MUST TAKE - NO QUESTION!

Come on, chief, out of bed every damn time they tell you to! Take your meds - who would give an elite athlete meds if they didn't NEED them.

And my mother always told us to "knock it off!" when we were being a pain.

    GO CODY GO!

    Thinking of you every day!

Cody!!! Remember last year when we were in boulder both our phones were dead and we had no idea where the house we were supposed to get to was. Somehow you squeezed one last phone call out of my phone, got directions and drew a map on the back of a hotel card and we set out on a mission. First was to find breakfast and mimosas, second was to find the car, pick up your friends and get to red rocks in time for the show. We weren't able to find a place that had both breakfast AND mimosas, but that didn't set us back, after some pizza, pasta, mimosas and narrowly avoiding an attack from a kid who had obviously not stopped partying from the night before, we set out to find the car. I felt like we were walking fooorever and even though we had your map that was so nicely drawn, we weren't exactly sure if we were even walking the right way. But that didn't matter,we said fuck it and refused to take the easy way out and get a cab, we were determined to get there on our own.we kept going and even did some dancing along the way, and all of a sudden we turned the corner and we were there! We got the car, grabbed your iphone, used the newly discovered nagivation, made our way to pick everyone up and arrived at the sweetest music venue I've ever been to for a kick ass show. So get up cody, you have made amazing progress in only two weeks, so don't get discouraged, these people are there to help you and so are we, if you get up and do this with their assistance it will be so soon that you'll be walking on your own. You've impressed everyone with your progress so keep it up, you got this one cody, get up,and go for your walk!! come on cody, do it up proud!!! Love and positive vibes...kate. Ps-the dance floor just called, it wants you back!!!

Cody- If you don't get your butt out of bed and let your buddies help you walk, all of us in the NEK will be royally disappointed in you. Chelsea's gotta go to NZ soon and she's really strong, so you'd better get up and get your ski legs back before she leaves or who else will hold you up?
Your doing great, so keep it up.

    Hey Cody,

You didn't get to the top level of skiing by always taking the easy way, and this is no different. As others have said, the only way you will walk on your own is to walk for now with help.

The pain medicine is a tool in your arsenal that will allow you to do the things you have to do to heal. TAKE IT!

Plus, remember this is costing money! Heard you were worried about that the other day, which I took to be an EXCELLENT sign.

Now is the time you have to look deep inside yourself and REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE. You are Cody f---ing Marshall of the United States Ski Team. World Class Athlete.

Then, suck it up and get your ass out of bed. We all know you can do it, boss.

Cody - All of Vermont is screaming, 'GET UP! TAKE YOUR MEDS!'

You have made incredible progress before you were even aware. Yeah it sucks right now, but you are strong! Use that strength wisely. Don't fight your healing! It is a process that you must go through. Don't fight with others! Play nicely. Follow instructions. Have patience along this path and you will reach your first goal of being well enough to get out of there. Listen to all of the wise coaches and healers around you...and us Moms across the country. GO CODY, GO!

    Cody,
I'm very sorry to hear of your accident.I to am overcoming a devastating accident while skiing @ Hunter Mtn back here in New York this past April.I broke a total of 10 bones which included my back, ribs, sternum, eye socket and almost my neck. I had to be airlifted to a trauma unit just north of NYC.I had to wear a special clamshell bodycast from my waist to armpits to support my spine. Although we both experienced accidents we both are going to recoup.I know you may be in pain now like I was but it shall subside. Healing takes time my friend.Be patient with yourself and family members everyone wants the best for you. There will be ups and downs in your recovery but you have a lot to look forward to and be thankful of.Although most think Im crazy for wanting to ski again I am keeping that as my goal.I am to old to compete @ a professional level but I still love the feeling of tearin ass down the mountain on some big boards!! Hopefully, I will be able to meet you someday and congradulate you on your recovery. If Im not able to ski this year I would like to get to Colorado in Nov/Dec,Vancouver,or Whiteface this Spring to see the team and my old team mate Thommy Vonn.Hopefully you will be there as well.I look forward to meeting you and your family.Until then take care and think POSITIVE eveything will be ok!!! I also wish the rest of the Marshall family the best during these hard times.

    Sincerely,

She loves working and skiing with your mom but has yet to figure out how to use a blog and write something herself.
