CALIFORNIA UPDATE -- CODY FRIDAY 5:00PM
Does everyone think its a bad idea for me to go surfing? There have
been a lot of people expressing their concerns with me regarding my
exciting weekend plans. Hasn't really changed my plans yet people,
you're going to have to do better then that! I am just a little bit
stubborn too, so good luck!
Before I head to the ocean for surfing tomorrow (hopefully I dont hit my head on something or drown) I have to get back to the gym today. My strength is coming back slowly, its a long process but I find that I can push myself a little harder everyday. I am making more gains then I think I even realize, Im still comparing myself to what I was like before my accident a lot too, which dosent make much sense.
Dont forget to watch Lindsey, Julia, Megan, Jess, Sarah, and Resi tomorrow in Soelden! I wish them all the best and will be watching here from my couch in sunny California.

Cody,
I have followed your blog from the start. I have never responded to any blog, but I feel compelled to do so after reading your current entry.
It is beyond me how you can even contemplate engaging in surfing right now and even have the audacity to joke about hitting your head. Do you have any idea the impact your initial reckless act had on those who clearly love and support you?
Either you are dense or incredibly selfish to put your loved ones through another trauma. You are lucky you are alive. Maybe your time should be spent writing thank you notes instead of causing others more stress.

Anonymous --- why did you post a response, below to your own angry comment?
Seriously.
Quit with the drama. Do you really think Cody is going to walk to the beach, dragging a surf board, and attempt to surf? Seriously. I think not.
Get a sense of humor, please. And stop with the, duty to respond to supporters, argument. Please. People support this website, Cody, etc., without any strings attached. Never demand that someone thank you for a gift. That request - Anonymous - is truly selfish.
Bad, Mr. Anonymous. Very, very bad.

I agree with the above blog. I was with you up until this blog. I am discontinuing my financial support and will no longer read the blog. Living is one thing; being selfish is another.

Yawn - Anonymous, please stop the drama.

Hey Cody,
I just read your blog and wanted to ask -- do you have the Doctors' permission to surf?
If you don't -- then .....don't!
If you do then -- do whatever your mother says!

If you are so willing to incur more medical bills, then I guess you don't need the financial support anymore. Good luck. I feel sorry for your family.

I'm not so sure that there was any support, financial or otherwise from non-believers and ill-wishers anyway. No loss, Cody!

To live in fear is to not live at all. Go get em' code! You hardly want the support of people who don't want to watch you tackle these challanges anyway. Good luck and have fun because that's what life is about codeman

There is a big difference between living in fear and living a death wish. Any neurologist would tell you that wanting to surf this soon is a death wish. If you are truly of friend of "code" then shame on you for encouraging him to compromise his miraculous medical progress. You are obviously not a physician or educated. You just want to be cool. That is not what he needs now. He needs you to be a friend.

Thanks "anonymous" but as I am his brother I think we are closer then most. As for his so called "death wish" don't you think that after the personal hell our family lived throgh we wouldn't look into absolutly everything before he jumped on his board? I think we've covered it all. Thank you for your concern as a supporter. As a participant in his recovery, I will try to bring the "cool" factor down
I love you codeman, have fun tomorrow

Since you are basically saying that his physician has okayed it, then best of luck to you and your family. I think it is a grave mistake, but you are correct that I am only a supporter, not a participant.

Cody,
Go surfing tomorrow!!! It's a great sport! Falling in the water is a lot softer than falling on ice. I do it every chance I get when I'm at the beach and the surf is up. Just be sure to wear that helmet. The one with the shaka stickers on it! If your really nervous, wear your slalom helmet with the face guard. Make sure to take pictures. And, ride a couple of waves for me. I'm stuck in Vermont at the moment. In between seasons. Bored as hell. I wish I could join you tomorrow. Have fun!

Cody, I am so happy that you are making the progress that you are. And it scares me to think that if you were to be hit in the head you might not be as lucky as you are now.. Try just getting a buggy board or try body surfing. I think that would be a bit less dangerous ..
Keep up the good work and it sounds like you will be back at your 100 % like before the accident..
take care

I guess there are a few questions I mean have you been swimming since the accident? And what do the Drs think. I say screw what all the people above are saying ( the ones about the financial crap) do what you HONESTLY think your body is ready to do. it is not always necessarily what your heart wants to do. I would go with the last post and stick with a buggy board. and to make sure you are surrounded by people. I personally dont think I would do it yet nor do I really want you do. but you have to live your life to the best you think appropriate. But remember a lot of people care about you and want the best they aren't being selfish or anything they just want the best for you and sometimes that's not what you want.

Cody,
Not a call I'd make. I think it's taking a big chance and it's too soon. Ask an aerlist who trains in the pool all summer - impact is impact.
Please give it some serious thought.

Anonymous- Really?! Do you really think after all this that surfing... full on board stand rip curl riding surfing as you apparently envision it would truly be considered? And your knee jerk response is in regard to any financial support you have given AND, just for good measure, you throw in some negative, hurtful comments? Really? Guess that pretty much shows who you are. You're the one I feel sorry for...
Draven...anyone that has truly followed this journey 'from the start'...through the battles on so many fronts just to insure Cody's survival...that would actually think you, or any of Codys family or doctors for that matter, would allow a situation that would jeapordize his miraculous recovery in any way should have THEIR head examined. Some folks dont stop to think or maybe consider there MIGHT just be some aspect of Cody's presentation that wasnt as it seemed...chalk them off to the same category as those who blame blankets for fevers. You have done an incredible, awe inspiring job and I never really thought that you had just decided to quit doing so now...
Cody...I am beyond glad I have the opportunity to address you...4 months ago I wouldnt have guessed... You have come SO far and fought SO hard and many of us have been with you in spirit every step of the way thanks to the blog aka your friends and family. I hope the support helped in some small way, and dont let the negatives that come with it get you down. Keep up the fight and keep on following the love and guidance of those that got you this far!

You crack me up!! How funny are you! Yes, you could hit your head on a few rocks, or have a shark squish your dome again, but then you would be stuck, back in a hospital eating green jello ... and, trying to give 40 year-old nurses your telephone number, AGAIN.
Have fun at the beach! Have you considered a nice game of indoor, Wii tennis?

Code...you're amazing. Love this. Have fun in the California sunshine and surf!
I am in London, so I just read the responses to this post today, after I saw Draven's new post. Crazy. People are whack. Do what you need to do for you and your recovery. Life was given to each of us to live. Enjoy living it. And, grab a few waves for me.
Smiles and positive vibes!

Cody Man,
Coach "Woody" here from Michigan. As I and many other people around the planet have followed your journey to get better and read your blogs, your thought of surfing sure has stirred up a lot of different emotions.
For sure I am looking forwards to the day that you are skiing first, and then taking on those red and blue gates. We all know how much you love to Ski Race,so my take on this whole surfing thing is that, please, please ,please proceed with caution, where your helmet, and have plenty of support staff there. And maybe even just cruise a little bit on the boogie board. Yes the water is softer than ice, but it can still hurt.
For me Cody, I sure would to see ya Race on the World Cup again if possible and or just enjoy free skiing one day. And you are making huge strides since July for sure. So, maybe its not a bad idea to re-adjust some of the things you want to do, looking way down the road, to reach your goals. There is a lot of passion that people are showing on the blogs Cody. So, it looks like everyone wants you to get better, and maybe not have as much "risk and reward" this early.
My personal support is with you either way Cody, as a Race Coach myself, I might have to be a little more patient on the surfing, at this moment.
Rock on US Ski Team, go get em, Lindsey, Julia, Megan, Jess, Sarah, Resi.

Hey Codeman,
You always were a bomb tosser. You love to see the reaction of the situation. And from reading this blog you really got some peoples gander up! Draven you have done an amazing job in helping with the recovery of Cody. And Codeman you are keeping it real doing the best you can to move on. Your body will lead you in the right direction. Do what your body will allow you to do. And enjoy every minute while doing it. Hey make sure you wear your helmet and those velcro sneakers may help with your balance
You crack me up...
